Promoting Konami’s 2023 eFootball Gaming App

During World Cup Years, tons of brands and advertisers seek to get in on the action. One of those brands: Konami. With the recent launch of their eFootball gaming app, they teamed up with BMG and our friends at Goal.com to create a promotional piece that told the story behind the 2022 football teams. See how we did it.

Project Backstory, Details, and Results

In the spring of 2022, BMG received a call from Goal.com, the world’s largest media outlet covering European football. They were seeking a partner who could help them develop a sponsored story from gaming giant Konami.

Thrilled with the opportunity to work on a brand that created many of the games of our childhoods, the BMG team embraced the project with open arms. Serving largely as a technical partner, Bell Media Group worked collaboratively with a dedicated team from Goal.com to build, test, and launch a creative new story format.

As a preferred agency partner of Shorthand, BMG often receives requests from other brands and Shorthand users for how to make the most of the technology platform’s inline functionality. And when they want something that goes outside the boundaries, well, BMG is the team with a reputation for making that happen.

In this specific project, our team coded a unique interface that would allow the user to click on a “sticky nav bar” featuring international flag graphics. When a flag is clicked, the story below repopulates to feature the team, highlights, stats, and details associated with the country. It was a slick bit of coding that enabled Goal.com and Konami to feature teams from 32 countries without needing to scroll through 32 pages of information.

The workaround was a hit, even drawing attention from some Shorthand team members, who had never seen anything like it.

Learn More about the Creative Process

Creating custom work within Shorthand poses unique challenges, simply because we’re working inside a third-party ecosystem. While Lead Graphic Designer Anthony DiPaolo is well-versed in creative coding languages, this particular project required a deeper dive. Working tirelessly to research solutions and dabbling in additional coding languages, he was able to test and develop a JS sequence to get the job done.
